I was recently found the book Potato Chip Puzzles by Eric Berlin while perusing a book store and was immediately turned on to it and can’t wait to share it with a class. I was even more excited to find out that it is part of a series about The Puzzling World of Winston Breen. Both books look like they may be good read alouds and both also offer opportunities to extend the book beyond the basic read aloud offering brain teasers throughout the book that you can share with your class.
Finding the website for the series also showed me that I could download and print the puzzles so all of my students could have or see them. If you think it might be something worthwhile, I would encourage you to check out the site. (Click the image below to go to their site.)
I shared about these on twitter some time ago and found out that Eric Berlin isn’t the only author who does this. Marjorie Weinman Sharmat along with Random House do the same thing with The Nate the Great Series offering some puzzles and extension activities on their site as well. (Again, Click the image below to go to their site.)
I know as teachers we can come up with extension activities on our own. We are used to it, but it’s nice to see, every once in a while, these extension activities woven naturally into the stories.
If you know of any other books/series that do the same thing, let me know. I would love to add them to my list!
